Cartizze is a small hilly area of only 107 hectares where the Glera grape is grown, used in the production of the famous Valdobbiadene DOCG Superiore di Cartizze sparkling wine. It is located in the heart of the hills of Conegliano – Valdobbiadene, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, between the hamlets of Santo Stefano, Saccol and San Pietro di Barbozza, in the town of Valdobbiadene. This hill has great slopes, exposed to the south. They directly enjoy the sunlight, which helps the homogeneous ripening of the grapes and guarantees high sugar levels.
The soils of Cartizze are among the oldest of the Denomination, shallow, composed of marls and white sandstones. They are also rich in minerals because of tectonic formation. Indeed, they derive from the lifting of the seabed and drain the rain very well. This allows keeping the leaves of the vine always dry. It also prevents the formation of moisture and the development of diseases of the plant. Finally, the clay bottom allows the vine roots to descend deep, guaranteeing a water reserve and a constant nutritional supply.
The wind plays an important role here. During the night, it descends cool from the peaks of the Prealps. The wide temperature variations between night and day help develop strong aromatic characteristics in the grapes. The result will be a fine aromatic sparkling wine with unique floral and fruity notes.
